POWER OF THE POSTERIOR CHAIN

What is the posterior chain anyway?

The posterior chain is a group of muscles consisting predominantly of tendons and ligaments on the posterior of the body. Examples of these muscles include the biceps femoris, gluteus maximus, erector spinae muscle group, trapezius, and posterior deltoids.  In simpler words, you can say the back, hamstrings and calves.

This group of muscular structure should work together as a unit to extended and stabilize our spine, hips, knees and ankle as we move.

In this technology and computerized world we live in today where many people do not move enough the back of the body becomes weak and compromised.  Even if you do exercise more than the average person many of us do not move through enough range of motion or thru enough different planes of motion.

How do you know if your glutei is weak? How do you know if your hamstrings are short and tight?  Does your back hurt when you go take a run?

If you sit a lot…you most likely have a weak/tight posterior chain.  Short/tight muscles pull on the bones.  When bones get pulled or rotated out of position…muscles have to work out of position and inefficiently.  Thus, the cycle begins and continues until there is inflammation, friction, micro tears, spurs, imbalances, joint damage and pain.  This leads to having to stop activity, then you start taking medicine, then pain pills and then the cortisone shots.  You start to feel better and start moving again, but the symptoms return and the cycle continues.

We all have to start taking care of our body with our own musculature.  I know…you thought exercising is a way to take care of our bodies!  It is…we just have to exercise in a better more mechanically proper manner.  The human body is meant to heal itself…if you give it the proper tools.

Enter FOUNDATION TRAINING!  Foundation Training focuses on the back of the body with a series of exercise that integrate decompression breathing and anchoring thru movement.  I have to say I was skeptical when I first started, but four years later my back feels great!  I use FT daily as my stretching for any and all activities I do.  You will reap great benefits from learning the FT protocol and exercises.

Get up from that desk and breathe…decompress…lengthen…it only take a minute or two.  Now you can get back to work…you will feel refreshed and energized.

DECOMPRESSION OF THE SPINE

Mon 10/6/14:
What is decompression? Decompression is a release of pressure or a release of forces causing pressure.
How simple is that? Everyone of us has constant forces pressing on us everyday. The number one force is GRAVITY! Our bodies are meant to be upright and work against gravity. Factor in poor habits like sitting all day at a desk, lack of exercise or movement in general, and poor posture with the effects of gravity pushing down on us….no wonder everyone is walking around with back pain, round shoulders, weak muscles.
We must get pro active with our own bodies. A doctor can give you a pill, a chiropractor can adjust you, a massage therapist can make you feel better also, but you have to do some work yourself and I mean everyday. Spinal decompression needs to happen much more frequently than any hospital or private clinic can provide. Intervertebral discs of declining health need constant and deliverable help, and they need it for life. No one can go to the chiropractor or massage therapist everyday! They are treating symptoms anyway…each individual needs to treat the causes on a daily basis.
The answer is Foundation Training! I know I say it everyday, but this is a solution. This is decompression of the spine everyday! FT is posterior chain stretching and strengthening everyday. The body needs this work. Most of us are walking around with glute muscles that are are very weak and do not function properly. All these posterior issues are self treatable…learn FOUNDATION TRAINING! I practice a little everyday and I am so much better. I still go to my chiropractor every month….now my adjustments hold longer. My chiropractor is a huge fan of Foundation Training, as is my massage therapist.

DO A FOUNDER

Fri. 7/18/14:
FOUNDER: The signature exercise (movement pattern) in Foundation Training. Add this one movement pattern to your daily life and your body will feel good.
Click on the link FT/Movement Matters in the bottom left hand corner to order the book and/or DVD to start learning Foundation Training. There are FT instructors in different parts of the U S and some countries if you prefer one on one instruction.
You can do a founder anywhere – anytime to decompress the spine, stretch those hamstrings, and to get that posterior chain woken up.
I’ll leave you with the link and pics of people doing founders.

FT Class Day 1

Thur, Sept 5,2013: What a day here in Walnut Creek. My 1st day of Foundation Training class. Went thru a lot of the poses, corrections, variations and the most important thing…the breathing. I’m sure tommorrow will be more of the same, but deeper. This stuff is really great. Even though I’m tired right now from having to pay attention all day, and physically hold those poses…I feel quite invigorated at the same time. Met some nice people also with their own reasons as to why they are here. At the end of the day we’re all after they same thing…gaining control of our movement and how our bodies move. Some of us want to be able to pass this knowledge on to others. Anyone can do this and should do this. More to come as I learn more.
