INTRODUCING FOUNDATION TRAINING’S: CORE ELEMENTS

FOUNDATION TRAINING has completely changed the way I look at fitness and the body in general.                                                           FOUNDATION TRAINING had given me tools to manage my chronic back pain as well as being able to help others.

I still apply FT principals and exercise every single day.

In my earlier years of competitive sports, training and personal training I viewed the body’s  health and appearance from the outside.  Good bodyweight, muscle tone and nice athletic moves are all great, but now I know…a truly fit and healthy body happens from inside the body.

Humans are the only bodies on the plant that move upright on two legs.  This puts our body in a compressed state as soon as we start standing and walking.  We battle against gravity all our lives…gravity wins in many many cases.  Factor in injuries, repetitive patterns, technology and just plain bad habits such as poor diets, to much sitting and emotional trauma our spines and muscular pulley sysmtoms succumb to all this trauma.  I, myself fell into this category of people.  Even though, I have always had a good weight, good athletic skills and exercised all my life…the chronic back pain became debilitating…coming more frequently and lasting longer and longer.  The “back episodes” affected me at work and at play.

Enter FOUNDATION TRAINING!  My wonderful chiropractor at Foxworth Chiropractic showed me the original FT book.  I took a look at it and decided to try a few exercises.  The exercises looked simple enough (they are simple) but, I knew immediately something was different.  I felt better after the first time!  I kept doing them…I kept feeling better and better!  Weeks went by, months went by and I was feeling great and no back pain.  I told Dr Cefalu (my chiro) I keep waiting for this to quit working…for the pain to be back.  It’s been four (4) years now…back pain is still gone!  Do I still have small flare ups…sure I do but, I know exactly what to do to manage a flare up.

I have been a Certified Foundation Training instructor for 4 years now.  FT has evolved in that time and keeps evolving.  I knew FT was special when I first tried it…even though I did not know why.  I do know why now…FT, takes it’s three (3) principles of decompression, hinging and anchoring and applies it to muscle chains and integrates with movement to build a strong, supple and powerful core (stability system).  FT…builds from the inside out.

For those of you who purchase this program and are brand new to the exercises…follow along and give it a go.  You may still need some help.  This is where you will need a certified trainer to come in and help you with things… body positioning, movement patterns, adjustments and maybe just answering some questions.  FT, really helps a person learn about “their” body…what it can do and opens the possibilities of what it could do!  That’s what FT did for me…made my body better.

FOUNDATION TRAINING

Thur. 2/12/16

FOUNDATION TRAINING

A bodywork practice…where an individual can integrate alignment, breathing techniques and anchoring techniques in order to create length and space in spinal area…therefore, helping to decompress the spine.  Create strength in musculature while in a lengthened state.  There is a heavy focus on “core work” utilizing decompression breathing.  This technique, really gets the diaphragm, pelvic floor, transverse abdominal and other deep myofascial muscles working together.  These deep muscles are usually the weakest because most people have quit breathing big and deep long time ago.  Most people today are so inactive and breathe shallow from the belly or the chest only.  These deep myofascial muscles are so important for activation of the superficial muscular system, and for stability in our pelvic spinal area.  Foundation Training, will correct and improve movement patterns.  All the reasons listed are why Foundation Training is so useful for everyone.

Foundation Training is a practice…just like yoga, Pilates, tai chi etc.  Foundation Training, has a heavy emphasis on breathing and the posterior chain.  Foundation Training is easy to learn, but has to be practiced.  Once you know some of the basics…a short 10 minute session will do wonders for the body!  A short one minute Founder at your desk will also do wonders for your body.  There are no rules on when, where or how long to do it.  It’s just you and your body learn how to lengthen, strengthen, move and feel better!

I have been practicing and teaching Foundation Training for over 2 years now.  My body is as strong as ever and my back pain is gone!

I have been in the fitness industry a long time…FOUNDATION TRAINING is absolutely a rock solid training tool.  Everyone on the planet will benefit from FT techniques.  Athletes, mamma’s, CEO’s, granny in the assisted living home.  If you want to stay upright…tall and strong, reduce back pain…because now you know how to breathe and train your core, have better balance, so you can ditch the cane.  Learn FOUNDATION TRAINING!

Getting Back To Basics

Wed. Dec 30, 2015

Well we are just about to close out 2015.  This was not a great year for me… I, for one am glad 2015 is in the books and ready to move on.  Hopefully, 2016 will bring some joy.

Let’s talk about health/fitness goals since that’s what I do.

My focus will continue to be “bodywork”.  Posture, movement mechanics, Foundation Training, corrective exercise, and floor work.  I’m really liking the floor work!  This involves crawling, rolling and animal movements.  It looks easy…but is quite challenging!

This type of work is all about going back to basics.  Getting our posture corrected is the first step.  Our bodies are not going to function mechanically as well as they should if our posture is poor.  Poor posture is epidemic and just about the leading cause of neck, shoulder and back pain.

The New Year is here.  The best time to always start fresh…start over!  Start with learning what some of your posture issues  are and correcting them.  I can promise you there is much more to it that just standing up straight.  Some of the things I teach are quite challenging.

For those of us in our middle age years this type of work is going to “young you up”!  I have been doing Foundation Training over 2 years now.  My posture is great and my back is so much stronger and does not lock up anymore.  My hips are much more mobile.  I know how to perform movements safely.   Something as simple as loading a dishwasher matters!  There is nothing more important…at least for me than being able to move well and have my health as I age.  I watch people all the time…the way they move, the way they stand, how their head sits on their head…a lot of these people will be much younger than me.  They probably have no idea why they are walking slumped over or with their feet pointing outward?Posture can be improved and movement patterns can be corrected… You just have to know what the faults are in order to apply the corrections.

Start your new year by getting back to basics.  Posture work, core work, movement pattern work, Foundation Training, some floor work and more!  This is the best way to work out.  It works for me….it can work for you!

Contact me with any questions you may have.

Have a great day!

FOUNDATION TRAINING

Friday 4/17/15:

The most common “ailment” in today’s society is Back Pain!  A whopping 80% of the population have some form of back pain.  Back Pain develops for many reasons.  Poor Posture, sitting to much, standing to much, being overweight, weak muscles, tight muscles, overpronation in the foot, to much anterior tilt in the pelvis, to much posterior tilt in the pelvis….the list goes on and on.

The good news is “most back pain” can be treated without medication, surgery or other major procedures.  The bad news is so many people are not willing to do a little work and change a few bad habits.  Most people go to the doctor and actually believe the medication that is prescribed will fix their back pain.  This just is not true and never will be.

First and foremost everyone needs to buy into the fact that humans are made to move.  I do not mean move from the chair to refrigerator, or from your desk to your car to your big easy chair at home.  I mean “ALL HUMANS” are meant to move all day long.  Our muscles need to be lengthened thru the day.  Our joints need to bear weight properly aligned through out the day.  Our muscles and joints need to be taken through their full range of motion through out the day.  We all need to learn how to breathe better using our lungs and diaphragm to a fuller capacity.

It is a fact that people in far away countries with far less than we Americans have are healthier than us.  They work in the fields, on the fishing boats, doing manual labor.  They sit in a squat position to rest.  They sit on the ground in general.  We sit in big, curvy comfortable chairs…never getting that hip joint to close down any further. Hard to believe with all that we have here in the states that our society is so overweight, over medicated, lazy, and unhealthy.

If you want to feel better, manage your body pain without medication, improve how your body works…you better start changing your poor habits.  Our bodies are machines that need their full range of motion.

FOUNDATION TRAINING will set you on the path to better body awareness and health.

HOW ARE YOU EVOLVING?

Monday 12/29/14:
Hard to believe 2014 is just about gone and it all seems like a blur!
In preparation for the New Year let’s talk about what’s happening to our bodies and what will happen if we don’t work on our posture, our movement, and our diet. Take a look at the picture below:

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/741/45300916/files/2014/12/img_1071.jpg
Take a minute to think about how we evolve…
We start out in the womb all curled up in a ball. We enter the world not yet ready to do much of anything except eat and sleep. As we gain strength we hold our head up and start to crawl. We start figuring out we can get places by crawling around, but it’s not enough. All that crawling got our legs, hips, shoulders, core stronger…we start walking…how cool is this?
We have evolved into active children. We get to spend years like this just “playing”! Run, jump, push, pull, bend just non stop movement all the time! What a freedom it is!
Then we turn into young adults. This is still pretty cool, but now we have to go to work everyday. Most of us sit behind our desk 6-8 hours per day.. Some of us will have jobs on our feet all day like retail or factory work. Some will have harder labor jobs like construction or heavy lifting type jobs. We develop poor habits thru the years because of a lot of these jobs. Sitting is on top of the list as being hazardous to our healthy. Standing all day is better than sitting, but you better be getting some range of motion in there or your muscle are just going to shorten up and get tight….just like sitting. The hard laborer job has plenty of movement …but is it proper? Are they lifting properly, bending properly? All these jobs are worthy employment…but when we retire we don’t want to look like the picture above!
Make your goal for the New Year to learn about your posture! You can fix that forward head position. those rounded shoulders can get better. You can turn those feet straight ahead instead of walking like a duck. You do have a core and you can learn to use it properly. You can fix your posture…so that you can breathe better. There is so much
that you can improve about yourself…if you just learn about your own body.
Don’t end up like those photos…start improving today!
